Jan 17, 2019 the easy way to change it i found an easier way to do this that will work every time find safari in your finder and then control click it click show package contents, then open the contents folder and then the resources folder, and then rename the file you want to use as your icon compass.icns drag it into the resources folder and click replace when the dialog box comes up, and viola you've. So I have a directory on my Mac (actually on an external drive that is attached to it) that is a backup copy of someone else's Mac. In it is a user directory, with an Applications directory, and some apps. Those apps keep wanting to update through the app store, and are showing up on my app update, with the other person's.mac id.
* Open the new folder icon in Preview
* Command-C to copy the image
* Get Info on the folder that you want to replace the icon
* Click on the blue folder in the top left (or PNG icon with apple logo from a failed attempt) - It should be outlined in blue
* Command-V to paste the new icon

But the key for me was opening the image in Preview and copying it. Drag and drop seems broken right now.
